Mandatory Credit: Sam Navarro-Imagn Images The Boston Red Sox placed star first baseman Willson Contreras on the 10-day injured list Monday with a left hamstring strain.
Contreras, who earned his fourth career All-Star nod earlier this season, was lifted in the seventh inning of Sunday's 16-1 loss to the host New York Yankees.
In a corresponding move, the Red Sox recalled designated hitter Mickey Gasper from Triple-A Worcester.
Contreras, 34, is hitting .274 with a career-high 26 home runs and 79 RBIs -- one shy of his career high -- in 125 games this season. The 11-year veteran and Venezuelan native is a career .260 hitter with 198 home runs and 627 RBIs over 1,203 games with the Chicago Cubs (2016-22), St. Louis Cardinals (2023-25) and Red Sox.
Gasper, 30, rejoins the major league roster after being optioned Sunday to open a roster spot for Roman Anthony, who was activated from the IL.
Gasper was 11-for-26 (.423) with five home runs and 12 RBIs over his past 11 games. Overall in 2026, the switch hitter is batting .278 with five home runs and 19 RBIs in 45 games. In 103 games with the Red Sox (2024, 2026) and Twins, he's a .211 hitter with seven home runs and 41 RBIs.
