Ryan Sweeney Punched A Door, And The Door Won
The Red Sox are healthy for the first time all year. The braintrust, including Bobby Valentine, Larry Lucchino and Ben Cherington, held a lengthy meeting and apparently decided not to trade Josh Beckett or Jacoby Ellsbury, but rather to go for it—after all, they're just four games out of a wild card, with two months remaining. Now's the time. No more clubhouse turmoil, no more off-the-field distractions, just baseball.
Oops, Ryan Sweeney punched a door and broke his pinkie.
When Sweeney grounded out sharply in the eighth to cap an 0-for-4 night, he took out his frustrations on the door leading from the dugout to the clubhouse.
"I just came down, walked down the stairs [in the dugout] and kind of punched the door a little bit, which I've done before but maybe not to this extent," said Sweeney, who is hitting .260 with no home runs and 16 RBIs this year. "I'm going to go get X-rays [Tuesday] morning and see if it's OK or not. Hopefully it is."
It's not. MLB.com reports that Sweeney likely fractured his pinkie finger, and will land on the disabled list. Oh, and the Red Sox won 7-3.
When Sweeney was pulled from the game for the top of the ninth, speculation at Fenway was that he had been traded ahead of today's deadline. Sweeney's name has come up a lot in rumors, and this morning, WEEI was semi-seriously wondering if Sweeney hurt himself on purpose to avoid being traded. Haha, just kidding about that "no distractions" thing!
