Mandatory Credit: Jonathan Dyer-Imagn Images Third baseman Oswaldo Cabrera is making his long-awaited return to the New York Yankees on Wednesday, 13 months after a gruesome ankle injury.
Cabrera, 27, is being called up to replace third baseman Ryan McMahon, who is heading to the 10-day injured list with a ear and throat infection that kept him out of the lineup on Tuesday.
Cabrera batted .271 with seven homers and 35 RBIs in 68 games this season with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He hit .397 with a .967 OPS through 18 games in June.
He is returning after surgery to repair a broken left ankle and ligament damage from an injury sustained on May 12, 2025 at Seattle while scoring on a sacrifice fly by Aaron Judge in the ninth inning of an 11-5 win.
Cabrera got his left leg caught underneath him and it twisted violently as he initially slid past the plate. He was able to touch home before screaming in agony as trainers from both teams rushed to his side. He left the field in an ambulance.
A switch-hitter, Cabrera has batted .234 with 20 homers and 95 RBIs in 301 career games over four seasons with the Yankees.
McMahon, 31, is batting .210 with eight homers and 23 RBIs through 69 games this season.
