The Cardinals Lost Their 46th Game
Photo: [object Object] Right-hander Mike Mayers got stomped in his major league debut Sunday as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the St. Louis Cardinals, 9-6.
Mayers lasted 1 1/3 innings and was responsible for all nine runs. In a six-run first inning, Adrian Gonzalez clobbered a grand slam and Dodgers pitcher Scott Kazmir hit a two-RBI single. Gonzalez added another run in the second with an RBI single, and Howie Kendrick’s two-run dinger finally prompted Cardinals manager Mike Matheny to pull Mayers.
Mayers finished his first start with an ERA of 60.75. Despite the forgettable introduction to an MLB lineup, he picked up some lessons from the experience:
“I thought I did a pretty good job with the first two batters and then it felt like it snowballed on me,” Mayers said. “I felt like that was the probably the hardest part, just slow the game down. I definitely need to do a much better job of that.”
The Cardinals are 52-46 and 25-30 at home. There’s always the next game!
