The Rangers Have Fired John Tortorella
After four and a half seasons of halfway decent hockey (which included a Eastern Conference No. 1 seed in 2012 and a 19-25 playoff record overall), the New York Rangers have canned head coach John Tortorella.
How could they, you will probably say, if you are a casual observer of the Rangers who enjoys watching hostile press conferences and in-game interviews on television or on sites like ours the next day. But oh thank heavens, you will probably say, if you are a fan of the Rangers or of good hockey or, really, of anyone or anything besides John Tortorella, who insisted on an ugly cycling-and-shot-blocking-centric style (regardless of his personnel!), designed the worst playoff power play in recent memory, and bullied the press for fun.
Anyway, now's as good a time as any to share treasured memories of Torts, by which we mean on-camera blowups—all of which become even funnier now that Tortorella will undoubtedly find some TV job. Our favorite is this classic between him and the New York Post's Larry Brooks, which was one of many arguments between the two:
