Man Who Helped Kill Women's Pro Soccer Dies While Playing Soccer

Early this morning rumors began to swirl that Dan Borislow, the millionaire entrepreneur whose legal war with Women's Professional Soccer was instrumental in bringing about the league's demise, had died at the age of 52. Bloomberg has since confirmed that Borislow died last night of a heart attack after playing in a pickup soccer game.

Borislow, a macho rich guy in the mold of Mark Cuban, should have left behind a legacy as a champion of the WPS. He bought the Washington Freedom in 2011—a team stocked with recognizable talent like Hope Solo, Abby Wambach, Christine Rampone, Shannon Boxx and Meghan Rapinoe—moved the team to Boca Raton, and renamed it after his own telecom product, MagicJack. Things quickly went to shit, though, as Borislow refused to market his team or even create a front office, and the WPS eventually moved to disband the MagicJack.

What followed was a long legal battle between Borislow and WPS that directly helped bring about the death of the league. Throughout his war with WPS, Borislow revealed himself to be a bit of a jerk and a creep.

WPS eventually settled the suit that Borislow filed against the league. Shortly afterward, the entire league was shuttered.
