The Cardinals Lost Their 70th Game
Photo: Ben Margot/ [object Object] Johnny Cueto struck out seven in a complete game Thursday as the San Francisco Giants beat the St. Louis Cardinals, 6-2.
Cueto used 105 pitches to work through the Redbirds’ lineup, allowing two runs, one walk, and five hits. Cardinals starter Adam Wainwright wasn’t as fortunate, as he left the game after 5 2/3 innings with four earned runs over three walks and nine hits.
The Giants took a 3-2 advantage in the fourth inning with Cueto’s sacrifice fly that allowed Brandon Belt to score. Angel Pagán added another run with an RBI single, and Denard Span hit a two-run RBI single in the seventh to pad the lead.
Despite the Cardinals’ 4-6 record in their last 10 games, Wainwright believed that the team’s postseason ticket is still there for the taking. From the AP:
“This is an important time for us. I’m not trying to downplay the game, but we do have time left,” Cardinals starter Adam Wainwright said. “We have plenty of time left to make this thing happen.”
The Cardinals are 76-70. There’s always the next game!
