This Is Just The Worst Rugby League Failed Try
In American football, you merely have to carry the ball into the end zone. But in rugby league, a player has to put the ball on the ground in the in-goal area for the try to count. Yesterday at the Rugby League World Cup, New Zealand's Sonny Bill Williams had an easy four points, but inexplicably slipped over the deadball line—out the back of the in-goal area—before planting the ball. No points.
"Embarrassed to not score," Williams tweeted, "but nothing wrong with a lil humble pie."
Fortunately for Williams, New Zealand easily handled Samoa anyway, winning 42-24.
This, from the really makes me wonder if we're actually speaking the same language:
Williams got the tradition "Who Are You?" chant – reserved for perceived tall poppies – from the festive Warrington crowd after the slip-up.
"I told him it's his shout for brekky tomorrow morning," said prop Jared Waerea-Hargreaves. "Hopefully he scores two next week."
